Why the Upcoming USPS Price Change is Great News for Ecommerce Businesses

We’re quickly coming up on that time of the year again…

On September 7, 2014, the U.S. Postal Service® (USPS®) will introduce a rate change focused on Priority Mail. And — brace yourself — Commercial Base prices and Commercial Plus prices are actually going down, especially for heavier packages. In fact, these rates are the lowest we’ve seen in a very long time.
So, what should you know about the USPS price change?

Those who ship heavier items will stand to benefit.

Five pounds and up is the sweet spot for taking advantage of the new USPS Priority Mail rates.

Breaking it down (if you use an electronic postage service such as Endicia), you can expect to save up to 25 percent on packages that weigh between 5 and 10 pounds sent to zones 1 – 5 over what you’d pay the private carriers to ship those same packages! And, if you’re a business that qualifies for Commercial Plus Pricing, you will save up to 42 percent over the private carriers. To learn more about the different USPS pricing tiers, please visit our USPS price change page.

Now isn’t that a breath of fresh air for ecommerce businesses, especially with the holiday season fast approaching? When incoming orders start piling up, you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank on your shipping services.

What are some of the other benefits of choosing USPS Priority Mail?

  • no hidden fees

With the USPS, you won’t have to stress over fuel surcharges, Saturday delivery fees, residential fees, or rural delivery fees like you would with a private carrier.

  • speediness

USPS Priority Mail allows you to ship from San Francisco to New York in just 2 days. With a private carrier, delivery would take 5 to 6 days — and it could cost you more.

  • HUGE SAVINGS

Over the holiday season (the two-month period from November to December), the average Priority Mail savings for shipping 50 packages (5-10 pounds) per day is $16,531 – that’s versus what you’d be paying with a private carrier. Sixteen thousand dollars over just a two-month period? Now THAT is something to jump on!
