USPS Proposes 2020 Rates

Every fall the U.S. Postal Service announces proposed pricing and service updates for the following calendar year—and it’s that time of year again.

Earlier this month the USPS submitted their 2020 rates for approval by the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC). If the proposed rates are approved they will go into effect Sunday, January 26, 2020.

Domestic Mail Classes

• Priority Mail Express Commercial Base Pricing rates on average will increase by 2.2% in 2020. A one-pound package sent to Zone 8 using Priority Mail Express, currently $36.52, will increase $1.53 to $38.05.
• Priority Mail Commercial Base Pricing rates on average will increase by 2.8% in 2020. A one-pound package sent to Zone 8 using Priority Mail, currently $8.25, will increase $0.17 to $8.42.
• First-Class Package Service Commercial Base Pricing rates on average will increase by 2.2% in 2020. A one-pound package sent to Zone 8 using First Class Package Service, currently $5.53, will increase $0.17 to $5.70.
• Parcel Select Ground Commercial Base Pricing rates on average will increase by 2.5% in 2020. A two-pound package sent to Zone 8 using Parcel Select Ground, currently $10.56, will increase $0.33 to $10.89.
• Media Mail Commercial Base Pricing rates on average will increase by 1.9% in 2020. A one-pound package sent to Zone 8 using Media Mail, currently $2.75, will increase $0.05 to $2.80.

International Mail Classes

• Global Express Guaranteed rates will see no change in 2020.
• Priority Mail Express International on average will increase by 2.0% in 2020. The average increase of a Priority Mail Express International 1 lb. package is increasing by $2.48. Priority Mail International packages to Canada are seeing an increase of 2.0% for a 1 lb. package, to $46.82 from $45.90 in 2019.
• Priority Mail International on average will increase by 6.0% in 2020. The average increase of a Priority Mail International 1 lb. package will be $2.85. Priority Mail International packages to Canada are seeing an increase of 5.6% for a 1 lb. package, to $35.53 from $33.54 (Zone 1.3) in 2019.
• First-Class Package International Service on average will increase by 9.9% in 2020. A First-Class Package International Service package weighing one-pound to Canada is increasing by $3.32 to $19.71 from $16.39 in 2019.
• PMEI Insurance on average will increase by 5.2% in 2020.
• PMI Insurance on average will increase by 4.9% in 2020.

Letters, Envelopes, and Post Cards

Rates for letters, envelopes, and postcards will remain the same in 2020 for both Metered Mail and Post Office rates. Endicia customers will receive a 5 cent discount on letters compared to the Post Office rate.
